Threaded rod, also known as studding or all-thread rod, is a type of fastener consisting of a metal rod with continuous screw threads running along its entire length. This versatile fastening component is manufactured in various materials, with mild steel and stainless steel being the most common, though brass, nylon, and other materials are also available for specialized applications.
The threading can be either metric or imperial, and common sizes range from small diameter rods like M6 (6mm) or 1/4 inch up to much larger sizes like M36 (36mm) or 1-1/2 inch. The continuous threading allows nuts and other threaded components to be positioned anywhere along the length of the rod, providing great flexibility in assembly and installation.
Common applications for threaded rod include:
Threaded rod typically comes in standard lengths, often 1 meter or 3 meters in metric regions, or 3 feet, 6 feet, or 12 feet in imperial regions. It can be easily cut to size using appropriate tools like hacksaws or power cutting tools. After cutting, it's important to clean up the thread ends to allow nuts to thread on smoothly.
Different grades and coatings are available depending on the application. For example, zinc-plated mild steel is common for general indoor use, while stainless steel grades are preferred for outdoor applications or corrosive environments. High-tensile grades are also available for applications requiring greater strength.
When selecting threaded rod, considerations include the required strength, environmental conditions, loading type (tensile or compressive), and compatibility with other components in the assembly.
