Rawl fixings, also known as wall plugs or anchors, are essential fastening devices designed to secure screws into materials like masonry, concrete, or plasterboard where screws alone would not get adequate grip. The term "Rawl" originally came from the Rawlplug Company, which pioneered these devices, though it's now often used generically for similar fixings.
These fixings work by expanding as a screw is driven into them, creating pressure against the sides of the drilled hole and providing a strong, secure fixing point. They come in various sizes and designs to suit different applications and materials. The most common types are made from plastic, though metal versions exist for heavy-duty applications.
When installing a Rawl fixing, you first drill a hole of the appropriate size into the wall material. The fixing is then inserted into the hole, and as the screw is driven in, it causes the fixing to expand and grip the sides of the hole. Some designs split lengthwise as they expand, while others have wings or segments that spread outward.
Different colors are often used to indicate different sizes, making it easier to match them with the correct screw size. Selection of the appropriate fixing depends on several factors:
Common applications include hanging pictures, mounting shelves, installing bathroom fixtures, securing kitchen cabinets, and mounting television brackets. Modern Rawl fixings can be remarkably strong, with some heavy-duty versions capable of supporting loads of several hundred pounds when properly installed.
